Refine nipple and areola appearance with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Melissa Larsen, serving Gig Harbor, Tacoma, and the greater Puget Sound area.
Nipple & Areola Correction
Changes in nipple and areola appearance are a common concern for patients at many stages of life. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, and natural variation in anatomy can all affect the size, shape, and proportion of the nipple and areola. Nipple and areola correction procedures are straightforward, minimally invasive, and can make a meaningful difference in how patients feel about the appearance of their breasts — whether performed on their own or alongside a breast procedure such as a lift, reduction, or augmentation.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Nipple or areola correction may be appropriate for patients who:
Have nipples that feel too long, wide, or prominent in proportion to the breast
Have areolas that are enlarged, stretched, or asymmetric
Have noticed changes in nipple or areola appearance following pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss
Are bothered by the appearance of the nipple or areola in clothing or swimwear
Are in good overall health and have realistic expectations
During consultation, Dr. Larsen evaluates your anatomy and aesthetic goals to recommend the most appropriate approach.
Procedure Overview
Nipple and areola correction procedures are minor surgical procedures typically performed in an outpatient setting.
In general:
Procedures are typically performed under local anesthesia, with sedation available if preferred
Nipple reduction — reduces the length, width, or overall prominence of nipples that are disproportionately large; a small amount of tissue is removed and the nipple is reshaped through a discreet incision at its base
Areola reduction — reduces the diameter of a stretched or enlarged areola through a circular incision placed at the areola border, leaving a scar that blends naturally with the color transition of the skin
Both procedures can be performed together in a single appointment
Procedures typically take 30–60 minutes
Nipple and areola correction can also be incorporated into a breast lift, reduction, or augmentation at the time of that surgery.
Recovery
Recovery is minimal compared to larger breast procedures. Most patients follow a general pattern:
First few days Mild soreness and sensitivity in the treated area are normal. Light daily activities are comfortable for most patients almost immediately.
Week 1–2 Any sutures are typically removed or dissolve on their own. Most patients return to normal activities within days.
Week 6+ Final appearance is largely settled. Scars continue to fade over the following months.
Dr. Larsen provides postoperative care instructions and follow-up visits to monitor healing.
Results
Nipple and areola correction produces immediate, subtle, and natural-looking improvement in proportion and appearance.
Final shape is apparent almost immediately, with minor swelling resolving over a few weeks
Scars are positioned at natural color boundaries and fade considerably over 6–12 months
Results are long-lasting, though future pregnancy or significant weight changes may affect appearance over time
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I lose nipple sensation? Some temporary sensitivity change is possible. Permanent changes in sensation are uncommon with these procedures but will be discussed during consultation.
Can I still breastfeed after nipple reduction? Depending on the extent of the procedure, breastfeeding may be affected. Patients who plan to breastfeed in the future are advised to discuss this with Dr. Larsen before proceeding.
Can these procedures be combined with other breast surgery? Yes. Nipple and areola correction is frequently incorporated into breast lift, reduction, or augmentation procedures at the time of surgery at no significant additional recovery cost.
What does nipple or areola correction cost? Pricing depends on whether one or both corrections are performed and whether they are combined with another procedure. Financing options are available
