Before I became a plastic surgeon
I've been trying to embrace social media more and recently I've seen a reel trending where professionals list the jobs they have had in the past. I came to medicine a little bit later than the average doctor and had an array of jobs before I went to medical school. I think until I found medicine I would get bored quite quickly. I also traveled and moved around in my 20s, and so I found myself often doing a job to pay the bills while I looked for something else. Regardless I am so happy I went into medicine as it really continues to challenge me, and I get to help people. I feel very fortunate.
Anyway, you might be wondering what some of those jobs were I did in the past, so here's a list.
- baby sitter
- factory worker packing chocolate
- data entry worker (twice)
- Office support worker
- remortgage department office worker
- Bar tender
- Turtle conservation field worker
- Teaching English as a foreign language to adults (Panama) and children (Nicaragua)
- Bar tender (again)
- Dive Master
- Volunteer coordinator in the not-for-profit sector
- Barista
- Urban Outfitters (folding T-shirts)
- Field Worker in Environmental Health research
- Project Manager in Environmental Health
- Waitress
- Laboratory Technician
- Tutor
I look back at all these experiences and really see how having this diverse work experience history really helps me connect with patients and provide a well rounded approach to patient care.
